Minority Goes Mainstream: indigenous languages now taught online

La Paz, Bolivia October 17, 2008 - - Language learners of minority and indigenous languages can now use the internet to learn with teachers anywhere in the world. High connection speeds in developing countries are creating new opportunities for people to learn languages that are less commonly taught.

Until recently language lessons were only available where the teacher and student were both in the same place. The increasingly widespread availability of high speed internet in countries such as Bolivia, South America has created opportunities for indigenous languages such as Aymara to be taught online.

Although English has become the dominant foreign language in the world, there is also growing interest in indigenous languages from Diaspora children looking for their roots and also from overseas workers, researchers and travelers who wish to connect better with local populations.

One to one classes in Aymara will soon be offered by the online school “Avatar Languages”. Aymara is an indigenous language that is spoken by two million people in the Bolivian and Peruvian Andes. This is the first time that such classes are offered on the internet and it allows Aymara learners around the world to take lessons without travelling to South America.

The online school is applying its innovative pedagogy to teaching Aymara, including encouraging students to create online presentations in Aymara to share with other students and web-surfers.

For a free demonstration or further information on online Aymara lessons, contact Howard Vickers or visit www.avatarlanguages.com/aymara.php . You can also attend his presentation at the ExpoLingua language fair in Berlin on Saturday 15 November 2008. Further information online at www.avatarlanguages.com/berlin.

Avatar Languages is an online language school offering one-to-one language classes to students globally. Avatar Languages was established by Howard Vickers, an English teacher with international experience, currently in Bolivia.
