Kyoto, Poznan and Climate Change Mariella Plotino From the 1st to the 12th of December, in Poznan, Poland, there was the 14th Conference of the Parties on Climate Change. It was a very important date because the future of the Kyoto Protocol depended on it and on its results. The Kyoto Protocol was the first legally binding instrument to combat climate change. Its CO2 reductions objectives did not solve the problem, but this Protocol has been a political victory more than an efficacious way to combat climate change. At the moment, the situation is much more serious and it will need a great effort from all the countries, Parties of the Convention on Climate Change, to give a shift to this global problem that could definitely change our world. The world is divided into two parts in respect of this problem. Developing Countries are not call to make reduction of their emissions, because they are making their path of industrial development and they declare that industrialized countries have to make greenhouse gas emissions reduction. The problem is that among developing countries there are countries such as China or India that have became the most polluting countries but do not want to have any restriction nor CO2 reduction objectives. The industrialized Countries think that their efforts would be ineffective if all the Countries in the world would not make their CO2 reduction plans, also the developing Countries. The Conference was not a success overall because in the meantime there was an important meeting between European Environment Ministers on the Europe plan 20/20/20/ that means 20% of CO2 reduction till 2020 and 20% of energy from renewable energies. The difficulties to come to an agreement in Brussels has put the Conference in a stand-by situation so there has not been a strong agreement on Kyoto Protocol future. The President Bush has never ratify the Protocol. Now with the election of Barack Obama, all the world hopes that United States will put into its hand all the facets of negotiation. The new President wants to invest a lot of energy into renewable energies and has put as objective the 80% of reduction of CO2 till 2050. This is for all the world a great hope. Only the U.S. could talk to countries like India or China to agree on a global plan to combat climate change. Mariella Plotino is a student at the online language school Avatar Languages.
